TusCon 45 Schedule released

Friday, November 9

10:00pm
The First Science Fiction Novel: Flatland  (This is my personal presentation)
Panel Room 2 (Mesa)
10:00pm – 11:00pm
Participants: Julie Verley

Let’s have a discussion about Edwin A. Abbot’s geometric novella! We’ll be covering its history and talking about its continued influence in contemporary society. We’ll take a look at authors and scientists who loved the story, as well as modern interpretations of Flatland in media from “The Dot and the Line” to Carl Sagan, “Big Bang Theory” and “Gravity Falls”. Not only a mathematical and scientific satire, Flatland is at its heart, a social parody, written by a churchman and mathematics professor as an amusing hobby. It’s had two films made as well as a variety of short media. Flatland continues to fascinate us, young and old alike. Join us for a lively chat about this novel and find out for yourself if “Abbot had the right idea”.

Discussion of works that feature supposed utopias or dystopias that are not black-and-white or are complicated/nuanced in some way; are utopias/dystopias more alike than different? Are they merely realistic societies that we like or dislike?

Jaws doesn’t work if the shark does. Alien hides in shadows to not look like a dude in a rubber suit. Turning weaknesses into strengths can be the missing ingredient.

Working on the new Diranda Studios!

Hello all! It’s been crazy busy lately, so I haven’t gotten to the site at all.  I’m getting ready to attend TusCon 45 in November, as well as putting together my cosplay and helping my daughter put hers together.  I’m going to be doing Female Ford Pines, aka Florimel Pines, and hope people at least figure out a little bit, who I’m supposed to be. 🙂  I’m basing my cosplay on the wonderful art of taco8998 at Tumblr, who was sweet enough to let me use her art for Flora when I was RPing her.  When I think of Flora, I think of taco’s art!

Due to problems on this site’s home server, I have decided to move my character sites over to WordPress.com (where I also have a blog), and hopefully that will make things easier in the future, when I need to move diranda.com off of lokilaw.

In addition to all of this, I am planning to do NaNoWriMo this year, and have decided (after a lot of thinking about writing and who and why I write for) to do Flora’s story.  Most likely it will be in various vignettes from her life, past, present, and perhaps even future. I also plan to feature other Gravity Falls characters, including those I have either imported into the fandom (Tiernan O’Rinn) or created for the fandom (Alistair the demon).  I may update some of my Liam stories as well, but I’m not entirely sure.  I also may sneak in guest cameos from Dirandan characters as well!

You never know!
